I have an obsession with trying to seek out "the best of" every food that I like to eat - the top of this list usually being pizza. The fact that I live in a city that itself claims to have the best pizza around can only mean one thing: there are hundreds of pizza places in NY to try and I am always ready and raring to go, napkin in hand!

One of the best places to eat pizza right now in the city is Motorino in the east village (their original location is in Brooklyn but lucky for me they recently opened in Manhattan!). Their pizzas have the most incredibly chewy dough that was totally new to me at first bite but now it's become somewhat of an obsession. I love this place so much that I made the trek there twice in a 3 day span... but in my defense once was for lunch and the other was for dinner!

Brussels sprout pizza with mozzarella, garlic, and pecorino. This pizza is heavenly - I never thought brussels sprouts on a pizza could work so well but they do it perfectly. On the menu, this usually comes with smoked pancetta on top for all you meat lovers, but I think it tastes amazing without it as well!

Spicy roasted octopus and potato with chili oil, lemon, and parsley. The octopus in this was so well-cooked. I would order this again and again.

last sunday the boy and I:
woke up late, walked to the meatpacking district, had brunch at pastis, drank two glasses of champagne, shared a giant croque monsieur and two slices of cranberry walnut bread, saw john kerry (he eats at pastis??), walked to chelsea market, saw whitney port (wow long legs!!), bought a milky iced latte from 9th street espresso, took not one but two samples of a brownie for myself from fat witch bakery (anarchy now
!!), checked out fresh seafood at the lobster place, walked to union square, went uptown to the upper west side, sat at barnes and noble, read vogue australia + british vogue, got inspired to cook dinner together, walked to whole foods, bought potatoes and mussels, went home, made moules frites (yum!!), drank a glass of beer, sat on the couch, watched into the storm (hi winston ), painted my nails chanel particuliére, got ready for bed, and slept. all in all, a perfect sunday.

One of the best things to do when you're in New York is to visit the MoMA - not only do they have the most amazing permanent collection and special artist exhibitions, like the Tim Burton exhibition that is running until the end of April, but it is also the home of an equally spectacular restaurant, Danny Meyer's The Modern. I recently went there and had a late lunch and drinks from the bar menu and was blown away by one particular dessert dish... but more on that later.

Don't be shy to come to explore the world of fine dining through bar menus - the quality of the food is exactly the same if they're doing it right and if you want to go to a restaurant where dinner is prix fixe only, this is the way to order a la carte and still be able to experience a restaurant that you've been dying to try. A lot of the time, I go to places like this and only order from the bar menu because I eat at really weird times during the day and it's not quite right to eat a full three course meal. The Modern also happens to have great seating accommodations for the bar and I actually prefer it to the formality of the main dining room.

I love salty butter - one of the rare occurrences that I actually enjoy extra salty food.

Hamachi Tartare with sea beans, yuzu juice and breakfast radish - this dish is so light and refreshing and I loved how they plated the radish with the artful arch of the stem gracing over the fish.

Crispy Atlantic Cod with celery and granny smith apple salad, sauce gribiche and American caviar

The cod was cooked perfectly - when I broke into this with my fork, the moist flakes broke away effortlessly and the fish opened up like a flower.

I can't stop raving about how they plate their food here - it's really too pretty to eat!

Beignets with maple ice cream, caramel and mango marmalade - I have to stop a moment here and tell you that in all my life, I have never liked a dish so much that I ordered it twice in one sitting. The small group that we were, polished off this basket of beignets in what seemed like one minute flat, and I immediately had to order another round. I couldn't quite place why this dish took me to another level but I soon realized that it was because it struck a strong chord with an old flavor memory. When I was a child, every weekend my very hard-working parents bought me a funnel cake from the flea market where they worked, and I cherished that little round pile of fried cinnamon-ey dough and powdered sugar like it was a plateful of edible gold. These beignets interestingly have a very similar flavor profile to a funnel cake, but they're definitely an elevated and more elegant version that any adult can appreciate.

norma's at le parker meridien

I'm always such a skeptic when it comes to the restaurants in NY that seem to be better known for attracting tourists rather than for the quality of their food but when guests are visiting me here, it's nice to oblige and branch outside of my norm and go for meals at some of the classic NY landmark dining spots.

Not many could disagree that Norma's is known to be one of the definitive brunch place in the city. Their out of this world portion sizes and price tags to match, get wildly mixed reviews, but my take is that once in a while, an unexplainable splurge on food is completely necessary and can be totally worthwhile and gratifying if you do it at a good spot - somewhat like shoe shopping right?

The best thing about this waffle, aside from the fact that it's sinfully sweet and is smothered in a creamy berry yogurt sauce, is the sugar brûlée topping. Who would've thought to do that on a waffle? Break out your kitchen torches and do this on your Sunday waffles this weekend... I think there's a reason why this is one of their most famous dishes.

Seared Rock Lobster And Asparagus Omelet

The boy insisted as soon as he sat down that if he was at Norma's, he was going to eat something with lobster in it. This was so big he couldn't even finish it - but I made him at least pick out all the lobster.

Le Parker Meridien is such a nice hotel and also has a really great (and affordable!) burger place that is frequented by a lot of nearby afternoon lunch traffic on the weekdays.
